The landscape of Guilin is widely considered the best of its kind in
China.
The Li River flows so quietly that you might think it is still. The water is
clear enough that the river bottom is visible. From afar, the Li River looks
like a green silk belt and the water like flawless jade.
The hills of Guilin are spectacular. Many are steep and narrow and look like
they may fall down at any time. Some resemble living beings, like an elephant, a
camel or an old man. When looked at from certain angles, the hills appear like
new bamboo shoots.
The rivers and hills come together in Guilin to create one of the world's
most scenic locations. Clouds dance around the tops of the hills, and trees and
flowers bring life to rock and stone. Bamboo rafts and small boats, which have
existed since ancient times, carry both locals and tourists alike.
A symbol of Guilin -- Elephant Trunk Hill
Elephant Trunk Hill is located at the meeting point between the Taohua and Li
Rivers and rises 55 meters above the surface of the water. It comes from
millions of years of limestone deposits. With its distinctive resemblance to an
elephant drinking from the river, the hill has become a famous symbol of
Guilin.
